About what Barket is, how it works, and who's behind it.
BarketIndia is a free online platform that connects animal lovers across India with NGOs, shelters, and foster parents to facilitate ethical and responsible dog and cat adoptions. We help streamline the process by offering a transparent and secure digital space for all parties involved.
No. All adoptions via BarketIndia are completely free. There are no hidden charges or financial transactions on our platform.
The only exception is pan-India adoptions, where a foster parent may ask the adopter to partially or fully cover transportation costs.
No. BarketIndia is not a shelter or rescue organization. We are a neutral digital facilitator — we connect adopters with foster parents and NGOs but do not house or rescue animals ourselves.
No. BarketIndia does not own or independently verify the animals listed. All pets are managed by their respective foster homes, shelters, or NGOs. We recommend you speak directly with the foster parent to confirm all details about the pet.
Everything about the adoption process, eligibility, and what to expect.
Our process is designed to ensure the best possible match between pets and their forever families:
Fill out the adoption form and share a valid ID proof. This helps us understand your lifestyle and experience with animals.
Send a short video tour of your home. For cats, foster parents will guide you on cat-proofing your space.
Connect with the foster parent to discuss the pet's needs and answer your questions.
A home visit by the foster parent ensures your environment is safe and welcoming.
Monthly photos and videos keep the foster parent connected. Occasional surprise visits may also be arranged.
Barket does not charge any adoption fees — all adoptions are free of charge. The only case where a small contribution may be requested is for pan-India adoptions, to partially or fully cover transportation costs.
Typically, the adoption process takes anywhere from 3 to 7 days. All steps — from form submission to the home check — need to be completed by both the foster parent and the adopter.
We encourage potential adopters to attend our Paint with Puppies events, where you can meet some of the pets available for adoption in person.
That said, meeting beforehand is not always required — especially when distance makes it inconvenient. In such cases, we recommend asking as many questions as possible during the adoption phone call to understand the pet's personality and care requirements.
Yes, provided the foster parent is convinced that you can responsibly care for multiple animals simultaneously.
Absolutely. Many pets thrive in apartments — you just need to be thoughtful about choosing a pet whose temperament and energy level suits your living situation. The foster parent can guide you on this during the adoption call.
Yes. Many families with young children successfully adopt pets. It's important to choose the right match and ensure the pet and child are friendly with each other before adoption is finalised.
Additionally, the pet and child should never be left together unsupervised — a responsible adult should always be present to monitor their interactions.
Some pets are listed specifically for pan-India adoption. If a pet isn't listed for pan-India adoption, you can still reach out to the foster parent directly to check if they are open to it.
Most animals are vaccinated and sterilized, but you must confirm these details directly with the foster parent or NGO. BarketIndia does not independently verify medical records.
No. Transfer of ownership — to friends, family, or anyone else — is strictly prohibited. If you are ever unable to continue caring for the pet, it must be returned to the original foster parent or NGO.
If you are unable to continue caring for the pet, you must inform the foster parent or NGO and the pet should be returned to them. Abandonment is illegal and unethical — legal action may be taken in such cases.
At any stage before the final adoption, the potential adopter can choose to end the process by informing the foster parent. Adoption is a lifetime commitment — if you feel uncertain for any reason, it's always better to communicate that clearly rather than proceed.
Regular updates — photos, videos, and occasional visits by the foster — are a mandatory part of the adoption agreement. Non-compliance may result in a request for the pet to be returned, and if necessary, legal intervention.
Yes. Foster parents remain in touch after adoption as part of the regular update process. You can discuss any concerns about the pet's behaviour, diet, or routine with them at any time.
For medical issues, we recommend consulting a veterinarian promptly.
We're always looking for caring individuals and families to foster rescued animals. Reach out to us on Instagram at @barketindia or @barket.in and we'll let you know which animals are currently available for fostering.
Everything about responsibilities, readiness, and how fostering works on Barket.
Anyone with a safe and nurturing environment for a dog or cat can register as a foster parent on our platform. As a foster parent, you are responsible for the pet's well-being until they are successfully adopted.
You can include your own Foster Agreement with specific conditions for adopters. BarketIndia recommends maintaining written documentation of all communication throughout the process.
Please note that BarketIndia is not liable for disputes, damages, or incidents related to fostering or adoption.
The rescuer is responsible for covering medical costs such as vaccinations and vet check-ups during the fostering period.
Yes — many experienced foster parents successfully care for multiple pets. That said, introductions must be handled carefully:
No. BarketIndia does not reimburse expenses incurred during fostering. You may collaborate with NGOs or independently seek donations to support costs.
Fostering is rewarding but requires genuine commitment. Ask yourself:
If you answered yes to most of these, fostering may be a wonderful fit for you.
